The Great Turn

There is a precise moment in late summer when the air shifts.

You can’t always see it right away, but you can feel it in your bones. The mornings begin with a heavy, silver mist that clings to the riverbeds longer than usual. The sun, while still warm at noon, sits a little lower in the sky, casting long, dramatic shadows across the valley floor.

The locals call it the Great Turn—the fleeting, beautiful bridge between the peak of summer and the first crisp breath of autumn.

Many travelers mistake this “shoulder season” as a time to stay home. In reality, it is the best-kept secret of the wilderness.

The Forest in High Definition

During the Great Turn, the forest canopy undergoes a slow-motion explosion of color. The deep emerald greens begin to bleed into strokes of amber, rust, and gold. Because the air temperature drops while the earth is still warm, the atmospheric contrast creates breathtaking morning fogs that roll right up to the windows of our unique cabins and glamping domes.

It feels as though you are living inside an impressionist painting.

The wildlife changes, too. The birds are louder, the deer move through the valleys with more urgency, and the entire forest feels charged with a quiet, beautiful electricity.

The Return of the Hearth

But the best part of the shifting season isn’t what happens outside the cabin—it’s what happens inside.

When the evenings turn genuinely crisp, the true magic of our A-frames and rustic properties comes alive. This is the time of year when lighting the wood-burning stove isn’t just for ambiance; it’s a necessity.

Imagine returning from a hike to the hidden waterfalls, the air nipping at your cheeks, and stepping into a cabin pre-warmed by cedar logs. You wrap your hands around a steaming mug of mulled cider, sink into the couch, and watch the golden autumn light fade behind the mountain ridges through the massive glass walls.

It is the season of deep comfort. The season where doing absolutely nothing feels like an art form.

The First Frost’s Secret

The Great Turn is beautiful, but it is incredibly short. Before you know it, the gold drops from the trees and the first true frost kisses the valley.

And it’s that very first frost that unlocks a phenomenon our guests wait all year to see. Deep within the valley, where our riverside cabins sit, the freezing temperatures do something extraordinary to the water vapor rising from the currents—creating a visual spectacle that looks less like nature and more like pure magic.

Next week, we wake up early to catch the frost. We’re stepping out onto the icy riverbanks to witness the “Ghost Mist” of the valley, and exploring how winter completely redefines the rules of isolation…
